Siliguri
Siliguri may called the Gateway of Eastern India as it is the main transit point for going to Darjeeling hill region, Sikkim, Bhutan, Eastern Nepal and Assam. It is the biggest town in North Bengal and is a fast developing one.
The eswhile base-of-the-hills market town is experiencing a boom. Till just a few years ago, Siliguri was merely a sleepy transit station for man and material bound for the more illustrious centres in the Eastern Himalayas. It is now emerging as an independent centre, as tourists are discovering its attractive aspects; forested surroundings teeming with wildlife and natural beauty, tea gardens, prospects of sporting activities, adn much more. The airport at Bagdogra is being upgraded, albeit too slowly, for larger traffic and biggger aircrafts. Hotels have gone in for renovations and new properties have expanded options. Roads are being improved, though still a lot more needs to be done in this sector.
